5-Axis Machining Materials
Fuming has extensive experience manufacturing precision components from a diverse range of materials utilizing 5-axis machining:
Aluminum is a highly ductile metal that machines easily. It features a high strength-to-weight ratio and comes in multiple grades suitable for diverse applications.
Copper offers excellent thermal and electrical conductivity along with strong plasticity. It is also highly ductile, corrosion-resistant, and easily welded.
Brass is prized for its desirable properties across numerous applications, combining low friction with excellent electrical conductivity and a distinctive golden appearance.
Stainless steel is a low carbon steel highly sought after for industrial applications due to its many desirable properties. It typically contains a minimum of 10% chromium by weight.
Titanium possesses material properties that make it ideal for demanding applications, including excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. The metal also offers an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio.
Composed primarily of iron and carbon, with other elements intentionally added such as manganese, chromium, vanadium, nickel, or tungsten. Alloy steels are generally classified into two main categories: high alloy and low alloy.
Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, delivers a versatile range of properties including high ductility, hardness, thermal conductivity, strength, and excellent workability. It is commonly used to manufacture nuts, bolts, threaded components, bearings, bushings, screws, and more.
Primarily an alloy of iron and carbon, it may also contain nickel, copper, or manganese. Carbon steel is widely used for applications such as axles, gears, shafts, rails, pipelines, couplings, and more.
Hastelloy is a high-strength nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy known for its exceptional corrosion resistance. This material is commonly used to manufacture components such as contour rings, hubs, flanges, shafts, and other precision parts.
Available Finishes for 5-Axis CNC Machining?
Surface roughness can be defined by its Ra value. Our standard finish ranges from Ra 3.2 to 1.6 μm.
Bead blast finish is typically 80μm as standard, with a range of 50–120μm available upon request.
Our standard finish colors include clear/natural, black, red, green, blue, and yellow/gold. We can closely match specified RAL numbers upon request.
Our standard finish colors are black or grey. While the appearance is significantly duller, this option provides superior surface protection.

What is 5-Axis CNC Machining?
5-axis CNC machining enables the production of parts with complex geometries while boosting productivity by minimizing the number of machine setups. This method allows rotation of the machine bed, the tool head, or both, in addition to the three linear axes of movement. It is particularly well-suited for machining deeper parts made from harder materials, ensuring high precision through the use of shorter cutting tools. The process also achieves faster machining speeds while reducing tool vibration.
Why Do Manufacturers Use 5-Axis CNC Machining?
5-axis machining offers several distinct advantages over traditional 3 and 4-axis CNC machining.
The primary benefit is the ability to machine components from multiple angles within a single setup. Complex parts often require multiple machines or repositioning with conventional 3-axis equipment, as they cannot access all sides of a component as effectively as a 5-axis machine can.
By tilting and rotating both the workpiece and cutting tool, 5-axis CNC systems provide enhanced flexibility for accessing various angles and hard-to-reach areas. This enables cutting tools to easily reach intricate features, undercuts, deep cavities, and other challenging geometries.
As a result, there is no need to re-clamp or reposition the workpiece, streamlining the entire manufacturing process and boosting efficiency.
Another common application of these additional axes is machining angled or contoured surfaces—a task that is considerably more difficult to accomplish with standard 3-axis CNC equipment.
