Production capacity and flexibility

FUMING provides rapid part production, enabling quick responses to sudden demand surges or supply chain disruptions.

Technology-agnostic manufacturing

We provide the manufacturing processes and biocompatible materials required for medical device applications, ranging from wearables to surgical instruments and major equipment.

Prototyped Medical Devices

Accelerate time to market

Prototyping and rapid manufacturing are critical for medical device development.

The design and development of new medical devices are inherently costly and time-intensive endeavors. However, prototyping and rapid manufacturing empower leading innovators to redefine best practices from concept to commercialization, enabling the efficient and cost-effective market launch of your new device.

Rapid prototyping manufacturers can deliver functional prototypes and small-batch production parts quickly, consistently, and affordably for concept validation and market testing. This process allows you to explore ideas, gather early user feedback, and refine purpose-built solutions, accelerating progress to lab or clinical trials and, ultimately, market entry. It also provides valuable insights into subsequent manufacturing processes, costs, timelines, and quality control.

Evaluate, test and validate your every step

Best Practices Enabled by Medical Device Prototyping and Manufacturing

Develop medical device product ideas into a focused scope by establishing critical details and fully understanding design intent through proof-of-concept prototypes.

Visual presentation models enable designers to share their design’s look and feel with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders, facilitating clear and actionable feedback.

Medical device functional prototypes (also called Beta prototypes) test form, fit, and function to refine design iterations and product performance, allowing issues to be identified and resolved well before final production, thereby reducing business risk.

Creating engineering prototypes that match the final medical device facilitates the verification of design, engineering, and manufacturability before investing in costly tooling and committing to full-scale production.

FUMING’s medical device and custom low-volume production services bridge the gap between prototyping and full-scale manufacturing, accelerating your product’s path to market at a competitive cost.

Which Materials Are Best Suited for Medical Applications?

  • High-temperature Plastics: PEEK and PEI (Ultem) provide high-temperature and creep resistance, making them suitable for applications requiring sterilization.
  • Medical-grade Silicone Rubber: Dow Corning’s QP1-250 offers excellent thermal, chemical, and electrical resistance. It is also biocompatible for applications involving skin contact.
  • Carbon RPU and FPU: Carbon DLS utilizes rigid and semi-rigid polyurethane materials to produce functional parts ideal for late-stage prototyping or end-use devices.
  • Micro-resolution: MicroFine™ (green and gray) is a proprietary material from Protolabs for 3D printing complex parts with microscopic features as fine as 0.0025 inches.
  • Microfluidics: Watershed (ABS-like) and Accura 60 (PC-like) are transparent materials suitable for microfluidic components and clear parts like lenses and housings.
  • Medical Alloys: With over 20 options spanning machined, 3D-printed, and sheet metals, materials like titanium and Inconel offer temperature resistance, while various stainless steels provide corrosion resistance and strength for medical components and instrumentation.
