CNC Turning Process Types
Many types of CNC lathe operations can be performed on modern turning centers, including hard turning, cutting off, facing, boring, reaming, taper turning, drilling, knurling, threading, grooving, and more.
- Taper turning: Machining cylindrical workpieces with gradually decreasing diameter from end to end.
- Hard turning: Applied to materials over 45 HRC, typically post‑heat treatment.
- Spherical generation: Produces spherical surfaces.
- Facing: Creates a flat, smooth end surface by feeding the tool from the outer diameter toward the center.
- Parting: Cuts deep grooves to separate a finished component from the remaining stock.
- Grooving: Similar to parting, but cut to a specific depth—either externally or internally.
- Drilling: Removes material axially using a drill mounted in the tailstock to produce centered holes.
- Knurling: Presses a patterned tool into the rotating workpiece to create a textured, zigzag surface.
- Reaming: Removes minimal material from a drilled hole to achieve precise diameter and finish.
- Threading: Cuts standard or non‑standard threads, typically single‑point.
- Polygon turning: Machines non‑circular forms without interrupting workpiece rotation.

Overview of the CNC Turning Process
CNC turning is a distinct form of precision machining where a cutting tool removes material from a rotating workpiece. Machinery movements are governed by computer commands, ensuring exceptional accuracy and repeatability.
Turning differs from CNC milling, in which the cutting tool rotates and engages the workpiece from multiple angles, typically while the workpiece remains stationary. Since CNC turning involves spinning the workpiece in a chuck, it is primarily used to produce cylindrical or tubular geometries, delivering far more precise rounded surfaces than CNC milling or alternative methods.
Tooling on a CNC lathe is mounted to a turret. This turret is programmed to perform specific movements, progressively removing material from the raw stock until the desired 3D shape is achieved.
Like CNC milling, CNC turning is well-suited for the rapid manufacture of both prototypes and end-use production parts.
CNC Turning Tolerances
As an ISO 9001-certified company, we manufacture CNC turned components to meet stringent tolerance specifications. Depending on your design, our CNC lathes can achieve tolerances up to ±0.005”. Standard tolerances for CNC milled metals follow ISO 2768-m, and for plastics, ISO 2768-c.

CNC Machining Surface Finishes
With a broad range of surface finishes, Fuming enhances the surface quality of your components. Finishes applied to your CNC turned parts are intended to improve appearance, surface hardness, roughness, chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, and more.
- As Milled – Cutter marks from the CNC turning process will be present. Surface finishing can get at Ra 0.8.
- Anodized – A thin and hard non-conductive coating is added to the surface of the aluminum parts. Parts can be anodized in different colors
- Heavy Bead Blast – this will remove heavier cutter marks and scratches left behind by sandpaper and will have a light texture appearance.
- Smooth Finish – This is typically 600 grit paper and can be polished.
- Powder Coat – Add a strong, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant protective polymer coating to the surface of the part. A variety of colors can be used to create the desired aesthetic effect.
