What is Laser Tube Cutting?
Laser tube cutting is a technique where tubular stock material is precisely cut to create various shapes, holes, designs, or channels using a controllable, high-precision laser. The tube or pipe is secured in a computer-controlled lathe, which rotates the material according to design specifications while the laser performs the cuts. This process can produce through-holes of any shape, with minimum dimensions as small as the material’s wall thickness. Laser tube cutting is also commonly used to cut channels that facilitate easier bending and welding of tubes for angular configurations.

This ±0.005-inch specification also applies to feature-to-feature cutting. Hole and slot diameter tolerances can be held more tightly, within ±0.003 inches. The minimum achievable feature size is determined by the material and its thickness; generally, features cannot be smaller than the wall thickness—for example, a through-hole diameter must be at least as large as the material wall thickness.

In general, laser tube cutting services provided by Fuming can achieve standard cuts up to 3/16 of an inch. However, deeper cuts reaching up to ⅝ of an inch are possible using a water-assisted cutting (WAC) system in conjunction with the laser tube cutter. Kerf dimensions vary depending on the specific material, laser type, power settings, and operational parameters, but are consistently much narrower than those produced by conventional cutting methods, thereby reducing material waste.
For laser tube cutters equipped with angled cutting heads—such as 5-axis systems—it is important to note that angled cuts alter the effective wall thickness of the tube. Therefore, it is essential to select a tubing thickness that will not exceed the maximum effective wall thickness when angled cuts are required.

When discussing structural shapes, it is important to distinguish between pipe and tubing: pipe is measured by schedule (for example, ½-inch schedule 80 pipe, commonly used in standardized applications), while tube is measured by its wall thickness (typically expressed as outer diameter and inner diameter). In both cases, laser tube cutting systems generally include settings for both measurement standards and can accommodate custom configurations for unique or non-standard profiles.
